Experts: COVID19 may be increasing domestic violence at alarming rate due to social isolation

By Charles Tharpe and Keven Flores

On March 20, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that there would be a statewide stay-at-home order to maximize COVID-19 containment.

Due to the order, many mental health officials say they are concerned about victims of domestic violence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four women and one in 10 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner.

But an early analysis of crime data from the City of Chicago Data Portal shows a slight drop in domestic violence during the early stages of the stay-at-home order, part of a five-year, steady decrease in such crimes.

From March 27 to April 5, Chicago had a reported 614 “domestic battery” incidents. That averages approximately 68 domestic violence incidents per day that are reported to the Chicago Police Department.

According to Chicago Data Portal, 2020 had the fewest domestic battery crimes reported than in the previous five years. In 2019, there were 691 incidents in the city of Chicago.

However, the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline has received 6% more calls in March 2020 than it did in March 2019. On March 30, the hotline had the highest daily volume in more than a year with 104.

Kelly Maginot, the assistant director of UIC’s Campus Advocacy Network said the order is “specifically dangerous for those living with their abuser.” She said, “an abuser can be a roommate, family member, girlfriend or boyfriend, husband or wife” Maginot and CAN typically work with intimate partner abuse survivors.

According to Do Something.org, the largest non-profit for young people and social change, more than four U.S. children die from child abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Over 70% of these children are below the age of 3. In 2018, Illinois had 31,515 cases of child abuse incidents.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and many child advocates are concerned about the children who are in potentially harmful circumstances. In many cities, calls to Children Healthlines have dropped significantly. In Pennsylvania, there was a significant drop in calls and  SpotlightPA says that this is dangerous due to the fact that many calls are received from mandated reporters of child abuse.

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) released a press release stating that the pressures from stay-at-home orders exposes children to violence and psycho-social distress. In 2014 during the Ebola crisis, UNICEF found that the crisis caused spikes in child labor, neglect, sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy in West Africa.

Hugh Cole, a psychotherapist and coordinator of Howard Brown’s Violence Recovery Project, says that many people are experiencing amplified emotions and anxiety during these times. Howard Brown Health is one of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ organizations with multiple locations within the Chicagoland area.

Howard Brown Health has created free virtual wellness groups to assist individuals mentally during the Stay-At-Home order. Cole said that although we are “physically distancing, we should retain social connection.”

During the stay at home order, many individuals who deal with domestic verbal, sexual or mental abuse are pressured to stay inside with their abuser. Illinois General Assembly  Charges domestic violence as:

  • A person commits domestic battery if he or she knowingly without legal justification by any means:
  • Causes bodily harm to any family or household member;
  • Makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with any family or household member

Sheila, a Chicago domestic violence survivor, said she feels for victims who can’t escape their abuse for at least 8 hours. She refers to the many Americans who have been forced to work from home and, in many cases, have lost their job.

Sheila said that work and school are the only form of relief some abuse victims have in their daily lives, which unfortunately, COVID-19 has uprooted.

In the past four weeks, 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment. It is stated that the loss of employment and the necessity for quarantine, only exacerbates the stress and anxiety creating abusive domestic situations. Where victims of domestic violence would find moments of peace with their partners away at work, now remaining together 24/7 increases threat.

During these times of self-isolation, we must remember that we can still be connected. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a resource dedicated to promote self-empowerment and hope to victims. With experts on call 24/7, the NDVH provides various counseling techniques for not only the victims of domestic violence but also the perpetrators. This resource is also available to friends and family members of victims.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a strong advocate for the stay-at-home order, announced a collaboration with Lyft and Uber to provide free rides to victims of domestic violence so that they may get out of their situation. A reported $20,000 has been donated by the ride-share companies to help combat domestic violence.

On April 27, Lightfoot announced that domestic abuse victims can now get a free hotel room, sponsored by Airbnb by calling the Illinois Domestic Abuse Hotline.

“We didn’t want an absence of a ride as a reason somebody felt compelled to stay in a dangerous domestic situation,” Lightfoot said at her daily press conference.

How to help

Victims are not alone. Kelly Maginot stressed that there are more than seven cultural centers on UIC’s campus that offer virtual meetings; and many different support groups.

“All you need to do is stay safe and we can build together,” Maginot said.

Hugh Cole, advised people who may be experiencing substance abuse or any traumatic emotional abuse to reach out for connection. “Small things like making phone calls or writing a letter.”

Aside from UIC, there are plenty of other resources in the Chicagoland area including: Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network; Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC);Howard Brown Health, and the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic.

If you or anyone near you know is in immediate danger please call 911, as always the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline is functioning 24 hours per day. Call or text: 877-863-6338.

Democratic nominees spend more money than they collected in donations

Democratic nominees have crossed the $1 billion mark when it comes to campaign funding during the 2020 election. As the US Primaries progress, many of the nominees have dropped from the race.

For the first time there were 3 billionaires in the running for Presidency in 2020.

The biggest spender of this race is Mike Bloomberg, a billionaire, who has dropped out of the race. Despite contributing the most to his campaign, Bloomberg fell short with only 61 delegate votes.

Take a look at the democratic nominees who raised the most money on their campaign, according to the FEC:

Tom Steyer, also a billionaire, dropped out of the race in February as he received no democratic delegate votes. The forefront runners of the democratic party are Joe Biden (former Vice President of the United States) and Bernie Sanders (United States Senator).

Biden is leading the race with 898 votes with Sanders following behind with 745 votes. Super Tuesday, March 17, 2020, can be a definitive moment for one of these nominees as Illinois, Arizona, Florida and Ohio are all participating.

Chicago provides grants to small business for major repairs through the SBIF

Golden State Warriors wins plummet as their dream team ends

The Golden State Warriors hit their highest winning record with 73-9 in their 2015-2016 season which debunked the Bull’s NBA record of 72 games. From 2013-2016, there was an increase of wins from what many would refer to as a Golden State “dream team” which in those years featured: Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and Damian Jones. The Bleacher Report describes this season as “unfathomable” There is a decline in wins as most of these players have been traded to other NBA teams. In the 2019-20 season, the Warriors are projected to have more losses than they have had in the past 10 years.

Chicago Pride Parade

The Chicago Pride Parade is an annual celebration in the city’s Boystown neighborhood to commemorate and recognize LGBTQ+ members.

The first parade was organized on Saturday, June 27, 1970, as a march from Washington Square Park (“Bughouse Square”) to the Water Tower, but then many of the participants spontaneously marched on to the Civic Center (now Richard J. Daley) Plaza. For many years, the parade was held only in Lake View East, a neighborhood enclave of the Lakeview community area. Recent parades have expanded their outreach (and ability to handle crowds) by extending the route into the Uptown neighborhood, beginning at the corner of Broadway and Montrose. The parade then proceeds south on Broadway to Halsted, continues south on Halsted to Belmont, then east on Belmont to Broadway and finally south again on Broadway to Cannon Drive and Lincoln Park.

On June 28, 2009, more than 500,000 spectators watched the 40th Annual Chicago Pride Parade. Among the entries were several marching bands, dance troupes, twirlers, and many political figures. Due to Chicago being one of the largest cities with a massive sports community, some other special guests have attended the Gay Pride Parade in Chicago, those include David Kopay (NFL running back), Billy Bean (major league outfielder) and Greg Louganis (Olympic diver).A Month of Coming-Out Parties. In 2013 the spectators rose to a record high of over 1,000,000. The estimation has been said to have increased since.

Gov. Pat Quinn visited DePaul University’s Loop campus on Wednesday to discuss how pension reform is harming the Monetary Award Program (MAP) college scholarships and access to higher education in Illinois.

“This is so important to our state, not only in the past, but certainly now and in the future,” Quinn said.
“We want everyone to have the opportunity to go to college that has the ability to go to college.”

MAP grants are need-based college scholarships that allow merit students who are in need across the state and do not need to be repaid by the student. Quinn said that due to cutbacks and having to pay more money in the pension amount, almost 18,000 students lost their MAP grant scholarships this year.

“We do not want anyone denied that opportunity because of finances,” Quinn said. “We can’t afford to lose all the talent that exists, all the ability that exists for higher education to help our economy and to help all of us, because there are financial challenges that deny someone the opportunity to go to community college or a four-year university — public and private — in our state.”

Quinn was joined by several Illinois college students, including DePaul Student Government Association Vice President Casey Clemmons.

“Every year over 5,000 DePaul students receive MAP grants, and just like the students who have already spoken here today, all of these DePaul students rely on this funding in order to continue their college careers,” Clemmons said.

“Because the number of Illinois students eligible to receive MAP is currently increasing, existing funding does not allow the state to assist all the eligible students. As a result, without action by the Illinois state leadership, more DePaul students than ever will see their MAP funding disappear this year and more

DePaul students than ever will be forced to give up their education due to finances.”

More than 150,000 students nationally receive MAP grants each year.

Clemmons told the audience that on Tuesday, DePaul’s SGA unanimously c

Ken Thomas, a University of Illinois Board of Trustees student member, MAP recipient and University of Illinois Chicago student, told how he wouldn’t be where he is today if it wasn’t for the MAP grant.

“My mom, when I was in high school, had to work two jobs just to keep food on the table,” Thomas said, “and if we didn’t have [the] MAP program like we do today, I know that I wouldn’t be where I am today; graduating with a degree, hoping to be a productive member of society.”

Having a productive and functioning society and economy is what Quinn says it’s all about.

“Jobs follow brainpower,” he said. “We want to make sure we have smart people in Illinois. Well skilled, well-educated students coming out of college with graduate degrees and diplomas so they can create jobs, create new businesses,” he said. “Our goal in Illinois is to have at least 60 percent of the adults in our state with a college degree or college associate degree or career certificate by the year 2025. In order to achieve we have to make sure we have a good scholarship program.”

Clemmons said that in order for that to happen, state legislatures need to reflect upon the question, “What must be done?” and do what’s required.
